I've always felt anything worth doing is worth doing right. I've quickly found that philosophy is the hallmark of Successful Farming magazine and Agriculture Online, where I serve as News and Features Editor.

For the previous two years, I served as the field editor for the Midwest Ag Journal, an edition of the High Plains Journal. My region of coverage mainly comprised Iowa, and my duties included writing feature and news stories for the weekly ag publication. In addition, I created and co-authored the Midwest Ag Report, a weekly e-mail newsletter. I served as associate editor for the High Plains Journal in Dodge City, Kansas, until 2004 after my graduation from Kansas State University in 2001.

Agriculture is in my blood. I grew up on a cattle, wheat and corn farm in the northwestern Kansas town of Hoxie. I raised market steers and hogs as a 4-Her, the proof of which hangs on the wall in my office: plaques for showing the county Grand Champion Market Hog, back-to-back, in 1989 and 1990 (I love to brag about that one). I've learned the hard way the wrong end of a steer on which to stand, just how smart hogs really are, the subtle feel just before blowing the clutch out of a wheat truck on a 105-degree day, and what can happen on the farm and in the rural community during both the good and bad times.

It's partly the latter circumstance, as well as a "Why does this matter to my reader?" mindset that drives me every day. I strive to write only what my readers, the nation's farmers and ranchers, truly care about. What matters to them is what matters to me.

A great deal of my work depends on interactivity with the readers of Successful Farming magazine and Agriculture.com. If there's ever a topic you feel is important to the business of agriculture, let me know. My work depends on hearing from you! Drop me an e-mail at jeff.caldwell (at) meredith.com.
