Building more storage

Because Minnesota farmer Chris Tesch was changing his crops from a 50-50 corn/soybean rotation to 100% corn in 2009, he knew he would need the extra storage space and would have to make a decision: Buy now or hold off and hope that prices would come down. If a new grain bin is in your future, here are three considerations to keep in mind.

Continuing a family tradition

Stretch your imagination a bit and you can think of the Dean farming operation as an interstate highway. When one family member signals an intention to move to the slow lane or to head down an exit ramp, another family member heads up an entrance ramp or moves into the fast lane.

Calibrating sprayers

Farmers are sometimes so focused on spray tip condition that they may overlook an operating condition fundamental to sprayer accuracy -- pressure. Uneven application of chemicals and untreated areas of oversize weeds are problems that can happen when there's uneven pressure throughout the sprayer boom.

Good gains on grass

Grazing stockers or yearlings on pasture can cut cost of gain. But there's no formula for success. Good gains hinge on an interplay between management, genetics and weather. "You just have to try to stack the deck in your favor," says David Davis, agronomist and head of the University of Missouri's Forage Systems Research Center.

Get cash corn and soybeans sold; put new crop hedges in place

"The collapse in the stock market is the most severe I have ever been through in the 35 years that I have traded stocks and commodities," writes market analyst Alan Kluis. "In the last 30 years, there have been two comparable sell-offs in the U.S. stock market. From the spring of 1973 to October of 1974, the S&P 500 stock index dropped by 48.2%. The economy was hit with higher oil prices and a sharp increase in inflation rates."

Ignore global warming

"It's tempting to get bogged down in a debate over global warming. Please don't. The doubters could be right. Maybe this is yet another scientific fad that's off base," writes Business Editor Dan Looker. "But I think Congress is going to listen to the climate scientists. And I'm worried that Congress will tackle global warming the wrong way -- by taxing greenhouse gases, driving up your fuel and fertilizer costs."

Metal bender is farm-built and built to last

Commercial benders are expensive. For only the $75 it cost for a final drive (gear reduction) out of a 1995 combine, Clair Wilson put together a machine that can bend metal up to 1 1/4 inches thick and has never broken down once in 14 years.
