The American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) this week added two new documents on grain storage and handling to its library of standards. One offers storage time estimates for dry matter loss in stored corn. The estimations correspond to the maximum time shelled corn can be stored before fungi damage will cause USDA market-grade reduction by one level. The other new document provides standards for combine cleanout.

  • Shelled Corn Storage Time for 0.5% Dry Matter Loss (D535) - Provides allowable storage time estimations for stored corn. The document contains estimations of the time required for normal oil content shelled corn to deteriorate to the point where 0.5% of the original corn dry matter has been lost.

  • Combine Cleanout (X598) - This standard was recently approved for development. When complete, it will provide a verifiable procedure for measuring the level of commingled grain in the combine grain tank sample. It will also include recommended acceptable levels of commingled grains to expect from commodities harvested by combines that have been thoroughly cleaned and prepared.

The complete standards, and other ASABE publications can be found at the ASABE online Technical Library.
