This fall, New Products Editor Laurie Potter along with Machinery Editor Dave Mowitz and intern Mick Frazier traveled to the Little Goose Ranch near Sheridan, Wyoming. They spent several days, along with a team of evaluators and engineers, driving all-terrain and utility vehicles of a variety of makes and models.

Our 12 evaluators and three engineers put 18 vehicles to the test on the mountains and in the fields surrounding the ranch. Our team drove each vehicle to learn how it would perform on side hills, in mud, over rocks and ruts, and through water.

Each vehicle was appraised in 12 different areas including access to engine and transmission, location of controls and gauges, ease of shifting transmission, ease of engaging four-wheel drive/differential lock, and steering responsiveness.
