DT Search & Designs LLC of St. Joseph, Missouri, and KLA Environmental Services, Inc., a subsidiary of the Kansas Livestock Association, of Topeka, Kansas, have joined together to form Kansas Environmental Management Associates LLC. The joint venture has been formed to develop and market a phosphorus management system to the livestock industry.

The new company is working with the Advanced Manufacturing Institute of Kansas State University to develop and test the system. The project with K-State recently received a $50,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Livestock waste phosphorus applications are regulated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Excessive applications of phosphorus can increase the potential for phosphorus transport from the application fields to surface water, adversely effecting water quality. Because phosphorus is a valuable nutrient essential for plant growth, intensive phosphorus management to comply with the regulations is important for both crop production and livestock waste management.

In 2001, KLA started KLA Environmental Services, Inc. Headquartered in Salina, this team of 12 professional engineers, agronomists and technicians provide livestock producers a variety of services dealing with natural resources.
