Recent trial data shows control of tough rice water weevil, grape colaspis

Valent U.S.A. Corporation has reported that in a series of Experimental Use Permit (EUP) trials in 2011, a soon-to-be-registered seed protection product—NipsIt INSIDE^® Insecticide—has shown positive results as a long-lasting tool for dry-seeded rice growers to fight early-season pests.

In the trials across nearly 150 rice fields in Texas and the MidSouth, more than 90 percent of rice seed treaters reported they were “very satisfied” to “extremely satisfied” with the results they saw from NipsIt INSIDE as a rice seed treatment.

“Rice growers have been under intense pressure from grape colaspis and rice water weevil and need a broad spectrum seed protectant that will help them tackle these pests right from planting,” said Frank Carey, Valent field market development specialist. “These trials have shown that seed treaters see the performance NipsIt INSIDE brings against these key pests to protect the grower’s single most important input—the seed.”

Carey said that to further validate the 2011 findings, the company will continue the EUP trials in the 2012 season in Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas and Mississippi.

Excellent flowability, handling
In addition to its strong performance on insect control in the field, treaters reported NipsIt INSIDE also delivered overall ease-of-use and performance during the treating process.

The seed treatment has been shown in trials to mix extremely well with rice fungicides and plant growth regulators, making it a highly compatible and effective tool for growers of dry, drill-seeded rice. Additionally, NipsIt INSIDE includes Valent’s Lock Tight™ Technology that aids in coverage and adherence on seed, ensuring maximum protection and performance.

As a result, in this 2011 field trial study, seed treaters reported positive comments about the NipsIt INSIDE handling and use:

• 100 percent reported the appearance of the treatment as “good” to “excellent”
• 100 percent rated the interaction with equipment as “good” to “excellent”
• 99 percent rated the handling of NipsIt INSIDE as “good” to “excellent” 
• 93 percent reported “good” to “excellent” flowability
