Heavy rains stalling Brazil soybean harvest

Agriculture.com Staff 01/20/2010 @ 11:54am

Early soybean harvesting is already underway across the northern Brazilian states of Mato Grosso and Goias. Rainfall over the past few weeks, however, has slowed the harvest, according to a report from Cropcast Ag Services.

"While rainfall has not been significantly above normal over the past several weeks, the rain has been widespread, leading to harvest delays and an increased risk for soybean rust." says ag meteorologist Kyle Tapley with Cropcast, a division of MDA EarthSat Weather.

This week got off to a relatively dry start across northern Brazil, but the drier weather is expected to be short-lived.

"Rains will return to Mato Grosso and Goias [late this week] with the heaviest rain expected to move in Friday and this weekend," Tapley said Wednesday. "The wet weather should continue into next week. The region could pick up an additional 3 to 8 inches total."

The continued wet weather would act to keep farmers out of the fields and maintain a higher likelihood of rust and other diseases. Mato Grosso and Goias together account for nearly 40% of Brazil's soybean production.

"Flooding and significant damage is not anticipated at this time, but conditions over the next two weeks will not be ideal for harvesting." Tapley says.
