High Yield Team: What's happening with the miracle crop?

Agriculture.com Staff 01/17/2006 @ 8:11am

Soybeans mimicked a battered boxer knocked cold on the canvas following the 2003 growing season. Low yields and a plethora of pests like soybean aphids soured farmers on this legume, tabbed as the "miracle crop."

The specter of Asian rust slicing through U.S. soybean fields in 2005 also led some to shift away from soybeans in favor of more corn. Then came the picture-perfect growing season of 2005. This, along with the fizzled Asian rust threat, caused U.S. soybean yields to average a record 43.3 bushels an acre.

So are soybeans miracle or mirage? Granted, weather plays a large part in making or breaking yield.

But as our mid-February cover story will show, management steps including proper variety selection, early planting, and well-drained soils can create an environment conducive to high-yields. It's all part of our High Yield Team project to get U.S. growers to push the soybean yield envelope.
