Going off-farm is a prerequisite for joining the family operation.
Coming back to the Guffy family farm isn’t as simple as merely being part of the family. Jim Guffy believes it is important for his children to work off the farm before joining the team. “You need to go off the farm and work before you come back to understand things better,” the Frankfort, Indiana, farmer says. “If you come home right away, you can get lax or too laid-back.”
