Make Your Own Parent-Child Farm Safety Contract

Many farmers are convinced that giving kids farm chores will
build their sense of confidence and responsibility. Of course, it helps to get
the work done faster.

Supervision and close communication are key safety
components of chores for kids. A 2012 study indicates that 27,000 children are
injured or killed on farms annually.

Farm Safety for Just Kids and Nationwide Agribusiness have
created a joint contract designed to initiate a conversation between parents
and children regarding specific hazards on the farm and to emphasize the need
for adequate training and supervision.

To learn more about creating your own customized parent/child
safety contract, visit farmsafetyforjustkids.org. In the search field, type in
“Parent-Kid Contract.”

A safety contract also could be an important tool if you
hire youth to help with seasonal work on your farm, including baling hay or other
chores.
