Iowa Farm Beautiful Winner

  • opening

In 2013, Successful Farming magazine and Exmark brought back the Farm Beautiful contest. We received heartfelt entries about beautiful farms across the countryside. Three lucky farm families won the contest and received a brand new Exmark Lazer Z X-Series zero-turn riding mower.

“It gives me great pride to live on the same acreage my entire life and now to raise my family here,” says Dave. The Heying family includes (from back left) Dave and Nikki and their four children (from front left) Brady, 17, Lauren, 9, Meghan, 15, and Kennedy, 13.

Dave is the youngest of eight children raised in a three-bedroom, two-story traditional farmhouse. Following the unexpected passing of his dad, Dave and Nikki moved back to the Granville, Iowa, farm. Shortly thereafter, the couple transformed the acreage into a modern farmstead, including tearing down old buildings, planting a windbreak, building a new home, planting blue spruce evergreens and shade trees, and adding pathways to the garden shed and heated shop.

“Although transformed into a modern farmstead, the memories remain from a childhood filled with ball games in the yard and walking beans in the heat of summer,” says Dave.

“Our family farming operation consists of 400 acres of corn and soybeans,” says Dave. “Nikki and I have continued a family tradition as we are the third generation of the Heying family to work with Pioneer Seed.”

  • kids

“This is a family-centered home,” explains Dave. “Our four kids lend a helping hand to keep our acreage well kept.”  And when they’re not busy helping Mom and Dad, the kids have some fun on the farm.

“We love country living and making new memories at home on the farm,” says Dave. Dave’s words were echoed in many of the entries we received. If you feel the same way and have a beautiful farm to show off, stay tuned for more information about the 2014 Farm Beautiful contest.
