Flawed Premise -- Corn Ethanol is Actually Environ 01/26/2011 @ 8:31am The premise of this research is that corn ethanol is somehow green. That is far, far from the truth. The environmental damage being caused by corn ethanol is huge as we are now dumping more pesticide, herbicide and fertilizer into the ground and water than ever before all in the name of almighty corn. This year approx 6M acres of marginal ground will come out of CRP (conservation) into production, much of it to grow - you guessed it - more corn. We have people tilling up slash ground around here, creating huge erosion and runoff issues. Corn ethanol creates net 0 or even net negative return on energy, has no impact on carbon emissions and is destroying our precious groundwater resources. I guess if it all goes downstream its somebody else's problem right? As long as we are making big money on government mandates and subsidies that's all that matters, right? Gee, hope the public doesn't learn too much about this industry or they might just shut it down!
