Intervet has new Lepto label claim for cattle vaccine

Intervet has received approval for a new label claim for its Vista cattle vaccine. The modified-live vaccine provides protection against Bovine Viral Diarrhea Type 1 and Type 2, Infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis, Bovine Respiratory Syncytial Virus and Parainfluenza3. Now, certain Vista products also will carry a label claim regarding Lepto hardjo.

Vista 5 L5 SQ, L5 SQ and VL5 SQ products are now labeled as an aid in the prevention of urinary shedding of Leptospira hardjo organisms, in addition to aiding in the prevention of Leptospirosis caused by L. hardjo – including the L. borgpetersenii serovar hardjo-bovis, L. canicola, L. grippotyphosa, L. icterohaemorrhagiae, and L. pomona.

"Because Lepto hardjo primarily is transmitted via the urine of an infected animal, a vaccine that aids in the prevention of urinary shedding is paramount to protection," Intervet Veterinary Services Manager Scott Nordstrom, D.V.M said in a company release.

"Regular herd vaccination is the best approach for protecting cattle from this costly disease. Unfortunately, even in herds with adequate protection that has been developed through a sound vaccination program, some cattle may be infected with Lepto hardjo with no signs of the disease. This underscores the importance of reducing the incidence of urine shedding," he added.
