All Around the Farm Idea of the Month: January 2009

The Klemp farm in Wheatfield, Indiana, has a dual-purpose tanker truck originally purchased just to haul manure.

"We were carrying water and chemicals on a flatbed trailer," explains Andy Klemp. "Then we thought, why not use the tanker? This way we eliminate one piece of equipment. We've reduced our machinery inventory.

"Also, we once had a spill with a poly tank on our flatbed -- just water, luckily. Even so, we appreciate the security of the stainless tanks," he says.

Originally, the former diesel tanker had baffels, which the Klemps cut out. It came with an air interlock at the bottom in the rear, which they still use for emptying loads of manure. Later the Klemps had a local welder fabricate a similar air lock for the top of the tank so they can top-fill for spraying. Because of the 9,000-gallon capacity, they can go all day on one fill.

An aluminum box with a hinged door once held the diesel tanker's load/unload controls. Now it carries fuel for the unit's 5-hp. pump. When it's time to haul manure again, they just remove eight bolts, and the whole chemical sling comes off with a forklift.

  • Family farm: These brothers farm 2,000 acres of mostly corn and some soybeans with their parents, Bob and Debbie Klemp. Andy's wife is Veronica. The Klemps also have a custom hog operation.
  • Favorite tool: "We like our welder and plasma cutter a lot," says Andy.
  • Next must-have tool: "Besides tires?" jokes Andy. "Well, air tools are good. I'd like an impact driver."
  • Future projects: Putting up some used grain bins. Last year's winter project was the chemical sling.
  • Dog: The farm dog is named Bear. He is fond of lying spread out on the shop floor and going for rides in the semi.
