What is needed to enter

Next, submit an Entry Form. Be sure to attach a detailed description of your entry or entries supported by illustrations such layout diagrams and related drawing, pictures and videos. And you are certainly encouraged to provide videotape or digital disc narrations of your entry thus giving the contest’s judges a video tour of your shop innovation.

The Top Shops Contest is designed to accommodate a wide variety of farmer-built innovations. Contest categories include:

Best Shop Design: This category seeks creative shop layouts. Contest judges are looking for shop designs that offer a variety of service, repair or fabrication bays supported by features like workbenches, parts and lubricant storage, overhead hoists, storage lofts, service pits, wash or painting rooms as well as related work centers such as a welding area or machining center. When entering this category be sure to describe your shop’s structural features like structure dimensions, insulation, lighting, drainage, heating, ventilation and door size and placement (in relationship to the shop’s layout and flow of traffic into and out of the shop).

Best Shop Feature: Have you built a unique or innovative workbench, overhead hoist, tire repair center, paint room, wash bay, service pit, hydraulic press, metal cutting stand, machining area, painting bay, or lubricant, parts or tool storage room? These and other farmer-built shop innovations all qualify to enter the contest. Please note that we have created a separate contest category for welding center described below.

Best Welding Center: An outstanding welding center is more than a welder and nearby table. Such centers have become major work bays supported with innovative work benches, ventilation, special lighting, overhead hoists and nearby machining equipment and tools like hydraulic presses, drill presses and metal lathes. Judges will consider how such a center was located within the shop as well as supported with nearby implements and tools.
