Best shop office
In 2005, Marc and Dawn Freese had to make a decision. Their expanding farm operation, Heritage Farms, had outgrown its old 50×120-foot shop and machinery storage structure. So the Fulda, Minnesota, couple invested in a new 66×150-foot building to house a new shop. But what were they going to do with the old one?
A huge meeting space and entertainment area are part of the new structure. A full kitchen takes up one corner of the room.
The end doors on the new shop open up to reveal the old shop and storage shed in the background. The old structure is now used for occasional machine storage, but it is used mostly to accommodate large groups attracted to the farm by a separate farm business.
Dawn Freese's office is set up as a business accounting room. But it also allows extra space for the couple's children to do schoolwork or projects while Dawn tends to the farm's business.
The open space in the center of the office addition provides an entertainment area for guests and employees.
A short path leads from the Freese home to the office addition. A playground puts their children in view from the window in Dawn's office. "Having the office close to our home was important since we are always in the office" Dawn says. "And it gives Marc and me a place to get away when we need to talk."
The winners of the Best Shop Office category in the Top Shops® Contest earned that honor by creating a professional office and meeting complex from an old shop.
