Maximize miles

Pain at the pump. You can relate to that feeling; it's one you've had for far too long.

While you may have invested in a fuel-efficient car to ease the pain, that vehicle isn't as practical as a pickup truck when it comes to hauling a load or pulling a trailer.

To maximize miles, Chris Houts has created a device to boost the mileage of a vehicle by 20% to 30%. It is an old concept – a hydrogen fuel-injection (HFI) system – that utilizes modern, quality parts.

“This system fits under the hood,” says Houts, co-owner of ZEM Tech, located in Wadena, Minnesota.

In the two-year development stage, Houts researched and built prototypes to test on his own vehicles. He appreciates the cleaner emissions and the mileage boost on his V-8 Tahoe from about 15 miles per gallon to 19 miles per gallon.

The system works on gas, diesel, and all internal combustion engines. Houts calculates that the return on investment for the system is one year or less.

How it works

The ZEM Tech HFI system includes an electronic control module, a 1-quart reservoir for water that lasts up to 1,000 miles, the HFI cell, and hoses that connect everything together.

“This system uses electrolysis to split water into its elements,” Houts explains. “The key is to do it efficiently.”

Through electrolysis, the water circulates between the reservoir and the HFI system cell. This creates hydrogen gas that flows to the top of the tank and goes into the engine's air intake and the combustion chamber to mix with fuel.

Hydrogen is an energy carrier. When injected in the combustion chamber, it increases the fuel's efficiency by accelerating the rate at which the host fuel burns. Instead of going out of the tailpipe and creating harmful emissions, the results are more energy for better mileage, torque, and horsepower, and reduced emissions.

“The system turns on with the key,” Houts says. “When the vehicle is off, it's just water.”

What sets this system apart is that Houts and his partner use quality parts, 95% of which are made locally. Like many HFI system builders, they started with low-grade materials that deteriorated quickly and required the system to be flushed often.

After a lot of research, they switched to a material that supersedes all others. That proprietary information is what sets this product apart and makes it durable and easy to maintain.

No flushing and no other maintenance are required. Simply add steam-distilled water when the tank is running low.

“If you run out of water, the system goes to sleep, and it's not going to hurt anything. You'll just notice the mileage decreasing,” Houts says.

A trained technician must install the HFI system. ZEM Tech supplies the hydrogen injection sticker for the back of the vehicle as required by the DOT.

What will it cost?

The company manufactures two system sizes:

• One for four- and six-cylinder vehicles with 5-liter or smaller-size engines ($599).

• One for eight-cylinder vehicles and small tractors ($799).
