Combine tweaks

Jeff Caldwell 07/26/2013 @ 11:54am Multimedia Editor for Agriculture.com and Successful Farming magazine.

Harvest is one of those few times of the year on the farm when speed is of the essence. And, when you're behind the wheel of your combine, there are a lot of ways to boost that speed, whether it's inside the cab, on the ground or inside the 'guts' of your machine. Here are a few more key things to keep in mind when you're rolling this fall. For more, check out Executive Editor Dave Mowitz's feature in the August issue of Successful Farming, Tweaks to boost combine speed.

Sizing up field losses

Options for a wet harvest

A seed here, a kernel there, soon adds up to a bottom-line busting losses, warns John Nowatski of North Dakota State University. For example, finding just 2 corn kernels in a square foot area equals 1 bushel. Just 4 soybeans per square foot adds up to a bushel lost.

Excessive rain by past spring in most of the Midwest is setting the stage for a wet crop this fall. The good news is that a combine can consumer corn whose kernel moisture at 25% moisture or higher, observes Matthew Digman at the University of Wisconsin.

Yield monitor Rx

Calibrating a yield monitor simply requires harvesting individual “loads” of grain that represent a range of yield levels in the fields to be harvested. The amount of grain required for each calibration “load” ranges from 50 to 100 bushel depending on the the yield monitor manufacturer's.
