Gator crosses over

01/31/2012 @ 10:35am

If you're looking for a vehicle that tackles tough terrain yet has plenty of room for extra passengers or gear, the John Deere Gator Mid-Duty XUV 550 or 550 S4 crossover utility vehicles could be just what you need.

“These new vehicles provide a balance of off-road performance and work capability at a very affordable price,” says David Gigandet, tactical marketing manager, Gator utility vehicles. “They are a great complement to our lineup of XUVs, and they offer the most comfortable way to get you, your crew, and all your supplies to those hard-to-reach destinations.”

Both include a fully independent, double-wishbone suspension with 9 inches of wheel travel. The 550 has up to 10.5 inches of ground clearance, while the S4 has 9.5 inches.

These machines also feature four-wheel hydraulic disk braking with stainless steel rotors. The sealed two-range continuously variable-speed transmission (CVT) drive case with high engine and CVT air intakes keep water and debris out and prevent overheating.

For the 550, you can choose between standard high-back bucket seats or bench seats. The 550 S4 comes standard with two rows of bench seats.

“Operators will appreciate the smooth ride, and they'll love the all-new ergonomically designed operator station,” says Gigandet. “The development of these new Gators started in the operator's station, so you'll find ample leg room, storage, and dash-mounted, automotive-type, controls.”

The 16-hp, 570 cc, air-cooled, V-twin gas engine powers both of these vehicles. They have a top speed of 28 mph and have four-wheel drive.

Each vehicle can carry up to 400 pounds in the cargo box. And if you need to transport the 550, it's small enough to fit in the bed of a standard pickup truck.

Room for more

Thanks to the 550 S4′s rear seat flexibility, you have the option to carry more people or haul extra cargo. With the rear seat in place, two additional passengers can be transported. However, if more cargo capacity is needed, the rear seat flips down to become a cargo rack.

“The rear seat flexibility in the Gator XUV 550 S4 is truly innovative,” notes Gigandet. “The S4 can transport up to four people. But for the times when you need to carry more gear, the back seat can become useful in seconds and increase your cargo space by 32%.”

The Gator XUV 550 models are available in Realtree Hardwoods HD camo or traditional John Deere green and yellow.

Want to customize your machine? John Deere makes it easy with over 75 attachments and accessories available, like cabs and brush guards.

The Gator XUV 550 starts at $8,199 and the 550 S4 begins at $9,299.
