Tractor sales surge in unlikely region

What region of the world buys the most tractors?

  1. North America
  2. Europe
  3. South America
  4. China
  5. India

Those picking the "spoiler" of this bunch -- India -- would be correct.

Last year, 342,000 tractors sold in Indian making it the number one tractor market in the world. Compare that to 260,000 tractors which sold in North America and 250,000 machines in all of Europe. What is startling about that figure is that just over 50,000 tractors sold annually in Indian in the early 1980s Add to this the fact that India now builds and exports over 60,000 tractors a year and you can understand why tractor manufacturing is big business in India.

The lion's share of the Indian tractor market (just over 50%) are medium-sized machines in the 30 to 40 horsepower range. Another roughly 25% of the market consists of tractors under 30 horsepower with the remainder of the market going to what the Indian marketers call "large tractor" that are 40 to 50 horsepower.
