JD 4240 tractor sold for $34,500

GREG PETERSON 02/29/2012 @ 3:00pm Greg Peterson writes "Machinery Pete" column for Successful Farming magazine and appears on the Machinery Show on RFD-TV, talking about trends in the used equipment market

These are amazing times my friends.

And by “times” I mean now, as in yesterday. This column shifted (4) times this morning as I sat down to write. First I was going to focus on the rapidly rising values on good used Hay Equipment. A couple recent examples to chew on:

  • JD 702 10-wheel hay rake, sold for new record high auction price of $3,500 Saturday (Feb. 25, 2012) on auction in northeast Texas

  • NH 488 9’ haybine, sold for $9,750 on same northeast Texas farm auction Saturday…2nd highest auction price I’ve seen

  • JD 328 square baler sold for $13,500 on northwest Wisconsin farm auction Saturday, highest auction price I’ve seen in 12 years

  • Many strong sale prices on round balers recently, such as: JD 566 sold for $14,750 on east-central Nebraska farm auction yesterday (Feb. 28th); 2000 JD 466 sold for $11,250 on consignment auction in northeast Texas last Friday (Feb. 24th); 2008 NH BR7090 sold for $20,000 on east-central Iowa farm auction Saturday.

But then I switched gears and was going to write this column instead around the 2005 JD

8420 MFWD tractor with 1,600 hours sold for a new record high auction price of $147,000 Saturday (Feb. 25, 2012) in west-central Iowa. That column theme stuck for about 5 minutes, until I talked to my auctioneer friend Gregg Miller with Miller ‘N Co. Auction in Newton, WI. Gregg told me about the JD 7200 6-row narrow planter with dry fertilizer, no insecticide, sold yesterday on a farm auction in northeast Wisconsin….and it went for how much?

So obviously my attention was drawn to these absolutely “red hot” 6-row JD 7200 planters. I quick tossed a note on our Machinery Pete Facebook page detailing the (4) I’ve seen sold at auction since last August for $14,250 or more, all the way up to $20,250. So great, I was all set to write this column about 6-row JD 7200 planters...until.

I heard about the 1981 JD 4240 tractor, quad range, with 4,971 “2nd owner” hours sold yesterday on a farm auction in east-central Nebraska for…wait for it, wait for it…$34,500. A new record high auction sale price I’ve seen on the venerable JD 4240. Wow.

As you can clearly tell from my non shortage of column topics, the premium being paid for really good condition used farm equipment just continues to rise here at the end of February 2012.

I wonder what we’ll see in March?
