Comparing apples to apples -- or grain trailers to grain trailers
A 1980 model Timpte 42-foot grain trailer is up for sale on a large consignment auction July 11, 2006 in West Fargo, North Dakota.
What's it worth?
Well, I could toss out the following facts based on auction sale prices we've compiled on Timpte 42-foot grain trailers over the past five years:
Average auction sale prices by year:
2006: $16,562
2005: $12,950
2004: $15,559
2003: $13,780
2002: $16,660
2001: $13,973
These statistics are relevant, as we've seen 13 Timpte 42-foot grain trailers sell at auction so far this year. The highest seller was a 1999 model that went for $22,000 on a sale in east-central Nebraska back on February 7. The lowest seller was a 1982 model in "fair" condition that sold for $4,700 in west-central Minnesota on February 28.
The Timpte for sale on July 11 in North Dakota is an older one, a 1980 model. So to gauge its current value we should probably not put as much weight in this case on the "average auction sale price" figures I listed above, as these averages are based mostly on "newer" models sold at auction.
What we need to do is selectively pull out comparable older Timpte 42-foot grain trailers, see what they sold for to get a better handle on what the 1980 model trailer on the upcoming sale in North Dakota is worth.
We just listed one pretty good comparison, the 1982 model in "fair" condition sold for $4,700 this past February in Minnesota. I also found these: a 1979 model sold February 1, 2003, in southeast Minnesota in "good" condition for $7,200; and a 1983 model in "good" condition sold February 11, 2003, in south-central Kansas for $10,300.
Now we've got a clearer picture of older model Timpte 42-foot grain trailers are worth. Click here for more auction prices on Timpte 40- and 42-foot grain trailers from the past five years.
