Machinery Pete: Even average equipment selling for big bucks

Hysteria.

The description wasn't mine. It came from a subscriber to our Web site in southwest Iowa who had attended a local farm auction last Sunday (January 29, 2006). The sale featured a 1996 Deere 9500 side hill combine with 2,200 engine hours. My guy reported the combine was in okay condition, not great, tires not very good. He thought it would need in the neighborhood of $25K in repairs.

The combine sold for $62,500.

Here's his take on the sale. "This sale had a huge number of bidders, maybe over a thousand. It is a feeling of hysteria that they have to get it now or there will be no tomorrow."

Needless to say, my guy thought the 9500 side hill sold on the high side. One thing I'll say about side hill machines. . . they are hard to find on the used market, whether at auction or on dealer lots. I've fielded a ton of phone calls over the years from folks in the market to find one. (See the chart below to view John Deere 9500 side hill combine values.)
