Machinery Pete: How geography affects used values

What's it worth in Missouri? How about Pennsylvania? Is it worth more money in Minnesota or Montana? What about California or Kentucky?

One of the things I love most about compiling all this auction sale price on used farm and construction equipment is comparing how similar items sell in different regions of the U.S. and Canada. With the extensive flooding problems of the last days and weeks, I'm beginning to wonder now about how geography may play a more prominent role in the coming months in determining what a piece of used equipment is worth.

We'll have to wait and see on that one.

Just this week, I received a mammoth printout of sale prices from a consignment auction in northeast Pennsylvania. I've picked out three items sold on this auction, a 1980 Case 580C backhoe, a New Holland 1411 discbine and a Ford 5000 tractor. Click on the links below and pay special attention to the "Location" column, showing you where each piece of equipment sold at auction, NEPA = northeast Pennsylvania, etc.
