Machinery Pete: It's all about the numbers

Facts and figures.

I've always loved to doodle with numbers. You should see my desktop as I write this column...papers with chicken scratch covering them. Kind of messy, but just the way I operate I guess.

I remember back in school, I'd finish up an assignment then on the back of my notebook and start playing with numbers. "Let's see, if Chuck Foreman (Minnesota Vikings RB) rushes for 150 yards this Sunday against the Packers, that will bring his season total up to 700 yards, which would be an average of 92.5 yards per game."

Numbers, numbers, numbers.

It's still all about numbers for me, except that now the numbers are auction sale prices on all types of farm and construction equipment. This month marks 18 years I've been compiling and tracking this set of numbers.

On Wednesday, I got a sale price report from my friends with Stock Auction Company in Nebraska. They had a nice farm auction Tuesday, November 6, across the border, down in south-central Kansas. On this auction was a 1998 Timpte 42-foot grain trailer. It had tandem axle, spring ride suspension, Shur-Lok roll tarp, 2 speed traps and 11R24.5 tires. This grain trailer was a one-owner unit in good shape.

It sold for $17,750.

That makes 51 Timpte 42-foot grain trailers I've seen sold at auction since the beginning of 2006. Over the last 10 years, I've seen 146 Timpte 42-foot grain trailers sell at auction. Average auction sale price last year was $16,660. Average auction sale price ten years ago in 1997 was $18,175.
