Machinery Pete: Used disk prices shoot higher

Agriculture.com Staff 12/17/2009 @ 6:35am

I made a post in Machinery Talk last week pointing out how values on nice used disks have shot up incredibly this month. I've been dropping back in to update and provide more examples of high sale prices on disks.

The first shot across the bow of rising values on nice used disks was the 2006 JD 650 32 1/2-foot disk sold on an auction in south-central Kansas December 10. It sold for $38,750. A new record high sale price I've seen for a JD 650 disk. Four days later on another nice auction in west-central Illinois, a 2003 CaseIH 3950 29'9" disk sold for $25,250, another new record auction sale price.

Of course, we all know why the sudden increased demand from buyers. All those ruts and all the field compaction caused by the late, wet harvest.

Even older disks are going UP in value. On a nice auction November 21 in northwest Ohio, an IHC 490 24' disk sold for $9,000, making it the all-time highest sale price I've seen (and I've got 381 sale prices on 490 disks in our website) over the last 13 years. Yesterday (December 15) on a small farm auction in northeast Missouri, another nice IHC 490 disk, this one 25,' sold for $7,500.

Hmm, gets me to wondering what other DISKS will sell for this month. A quick peek in our "upcoming auction" database at Machinerypete.com shows (63) disks listed for sale on upcoming auctions around the country. Here are few that caught my eye:

  • IHC 490 (21'): December 22 farm auction, Blakesburg, Iowa
  • CaseIH 496 (22'): December 22 farm auction, Palmyra, Illinois
  • JD 235: December 19 farm auction, Walnut, Illinois

I will be at the December 19 farm auction in Walnut, Illinois, shooting video of the sale. Check our website, Machinerypete.com, for the video highlights of that Illinois auction, plus highlights of two other auctions I'm shooting this week. The first was yesterday (December 15) in southeast Minnesota, a huge Ritchie Brothers auction that featured a 2009 CaseIH 7120 combine and a 2008 CaseIH 8010 combine, both with low hours.

I'll also have video highlights from a huge farm auction today (December 17) in southwest Kansas by Del Peterson & Associates. Not much tillage equipment on this auction, but I guess the (4) 2009 JD 9770 STS combines, (3) 2009 model pickups, 2009 and 2008 model JD 8530 MFWD tractors, plus tons of late-model hay equipment will manage to hold my interest.
