Machinery Pete compares prices: Midwest vs. Southeast

Agriculture.com Staff 05/09/2007 @ 12:54pm

Last Saturday, May 5, a 1980 model Ford 3000 tractor in "fair" condition with 2,200 hours sold for $5,000 on an auction in northwest Georgia.

I'm a midwestern guy, lived in Minnesota all my life, but I really enjoy collecting auction sale price data different parts of the country, like the southeastern U.S. It's fun to compare and see what similar items sell for in different parts of the country, or even up north in Canada where we also collect data from.

Click on the link below to pull up all our auction sale price data on Ford 3000 tractors from the last 10-plus years. Note the "Location" column: We've seen Ford 3000s sold in Washington, North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Indiana, Wisconsin, Illinois, North Dakota, Mississippi and Ohio over the last 29 months.

Also up for sale on that auction in Georgia last Saturday was a 1990 model Deutz-Allis 6260 tractor with 1,200 hours, cab and front-end loader. I took a call from a guy prior to the auction wondering what it was worth. I told him about the 1986 model 6260 with 2,085 hours in "good" condition that sold last December in northwest Illinois for $10,500. That tractor sold with cab and Deutz-Allis 456 loader. I also told the caller about the 1991 6260 with 2,885 hours in "excellent" condition that sold in northeast Indiana back in August 2005 for $9,000. That 6260 also had cab and 456 loader.

So what did the Deutz-Allis 6260 for sale last Saturday in northwest Georgia sell for?

$15,000. Pretty strong sale price, just like the 1980 Ford 3000 tractor with 2,200 in just "fair" condition selling for $5,000 was a pretty strong sale price. No big surprise considering how I've seen used equipment values on all types of equipment spike at 15% higher since late November 2006 regardless of location.

Incidentally, Ford 3000 tractors were made from 1965-86 and are approximately 38 horsepower. Check out the links below to view what a few other tractors of similar vintage and horsepower have been selling for.
