I've documented 363 John Deere 4450 tractors sold at auction over the last decade. Earlier this week a sale price report was faxed into our office from a farm sale held Tuesday (April 10, 2007) in north-central Iowa. This auction featured a 1984 model JD 4450 tractor.

With the most hours I've ever seen on a 4450: 14,319 hours.

Got me thinking. Quite often I write about very low-hour tractors or various types of farm equipment in exceedingly good condition, a lot of late-model stuff. We're all rightly interested to see how much this shiny equipment sells for.

But what about the other end of the used equipment spectrum, stuff that has been shall we say "well used?" So I thought I'd try something a little different this week and shine our spotlight on higher houred, more well-used tractors.

Click on the link below to pull up our data table of all the JD 4450 tractors I've seen sell at auction over the last 10 years. There's just one caveat: each tractor listed has at least 7,000 hours on it.

Interesting stuff.

If you read my column here online or in print in Successful Farming magazine, you'll probably recall I've been yakking about how used equipment values have shot up 10 to 20% since late November 2006. This data on high hour JD 4450s proves this point again.

Note the 1983 model 4450 two-wheel drive with 8,286 hours sold February 24, 2007, in west-central Illinois for $28,500 or the 1984 model 4450 mechanical front-wheel drive 4450 sold March 15, 2007, in northeast Nebraska for $36,250.

Pretty darn strong sale prices for 23- to 24-year-old tractor with those kinds of hours.

Now skim back through our data table and see what high hour JD 4450 tractors sold for three, five, 10 years ago. The same or even less money. Quite often we think, and I fall into this trap also, that it's only the shiny, low-hour used equipment that can appreciate in value. Not true. Our data on JD 4450 tractor with high hours proves the point.
