Record prices from Missouri sale

Agriculture.com Staff 04/24/2008 @ 4:00pm

Sold last Saturday (April 19, 2008) on a nice farm auction in east-central Missouri: a 1998 JD 9510 combine, four-wheel drive, with 1,748 engine (1,275 separator) hours, for $84,000. This combine had new cylinder bars two years ago and a new throat chain one year ago.

This combine really caught my attention. A price tag of $84,000 is the highest auction sale price I've seen on a JD 9510 combine since September 2002.

In fact, I had to go back to December 2003 to find another JD 9510 combine sold for at least $80,000. More proof of how "in demand" all types of really nice condition used farm equipment are right now.

Here's something interesting. Back on September 13, 2001, an auction in northeast Missouri had a pair of JD 9510 combines sold. One was a 1998 model with 404 separator hours. It went for $84,500. The other was a 1999 model with only 210 separator hours. It sold for $88,000. Both were four-wheel drive.

So zoom ahead a little over six and a half years and compare the 1998 JD 9510 sold in close to the same area, east-central Missouri, last Saturday for the same money - $84,000. So much for depreciating assets I guess.

This same auction also saw a 1998 JD 7610 mechanical front-wheel drive tractor with 318 hours sell for $82,750. That's another record setter, the highest auction sale price I've ever run across on a JD 7610 tractor.

How about this for a reference point: Back on May 5, 2001, a 1999 model JD 7610 MFWD tractor with 279 hours and a JD 740 loader sold on an auction in west-central South Dakota for $71,500. Take off whatever you think that 740 loader was worth, say $7K, and you're left with a two-year-old 7610 selling for $64,500.

Seven years later, basically the exact same tractor, now 10 years old, is now worth $82,750. Amazing.
