What will it sell for?

For sale tomorrow (June 6, 2008): A 1996 JD 8100 mechanical front-wheel drive tractor with 1,573 hours, deluxe cab, PS, 3 hyd., quick coupler, front fenders, weight bracket and JD duals. This farm auction is in Eagle Grove, Iowa (NCIA) by my friends at Ryerson Auction (www.ryersonauctionrealtyltd.com).

So, what do you think it will sell for?

I've been wondering the same thing, ever since I saw this sale bill a number of weeks ago. Don't see many JD 8100s (pictured) with under 2,000 hours around. Plus if you follow my writings in Successful Farming magazine or online here at www.agriculture.com, you know I've been saying for seven months now that used equipment values are way up, especially on the very good condition items, like this JD 8100 tractor.

Let's look for comparables, it's always the best place to start. Check out these JD 8100s sold at auction over the last couple years.

Okay, now we can start to formulate an educated guess as to what a tractor like this is currently worth. Look at the 1997 model 8100 with 2,220 hours sold 12 months ago, last June, in this same north-central Iowa region for $71,750. Now check out the 1998 JD 8100 with 2,218 hours sold February 19, 2008, in east-central Kansas for $71,000. Throw in one more, the 8100 with 2,110 hours sold April 6, 2006, in northeast South Dakota for $74,000.

Now we've got three 8100s with between 2,110 to 2,218 hours selling in the $71,000 to $74,000 range.

But the JD 8100 selling tomorrow has roughly 600 fewer hours on it. How much more could it sell for? A little more perspective for you. In January, we saw a nice 2000 model JD 8110 mechanical front-wheel drive tractor with 2,450 hours sell for $85,000 in east-central Nebraska. Last November, a 2001 model 8110 with only 402 hours sold for $96,000 in northwest Ohio.

Add it up and I'll guess the 8100 tomorrow will sell for $76,500. Incidentally, the highest auction sale price I've ever run across for a JD 8100 tractor is $82,000, which sold back on April 3, 2002, on a southeast Kansas sale. It was a 1998 model with only 288 hours. (Click on the link below to view all JD 8100s (234) I've seen sell at auction over the last 12 years.

If it did sell for my guess of $76,500? Ironically, that would be the exact same money the first 8100 in our sale price data table sold for: $76,500 for a 1995 model 8100 with 94 hours back on July 11, 1996, on a sale in northeast Iowa.
