Huge consignment auctions

GREG PETERSON 03/23/2011 @ 11:22am Greg Peterson writes "Machinery Pete" column for Successful Farming magazine and appears on the Machinery Show on RFD-TV, talking about trends in the used equipment market

You say March Madness involves basketball? I say auctions.

The middle of March has always been the busiest time of year for machinery auctions. I noticed this back 21 years ago when I started tracking auction sale price data and the trend has held true over the last two-plus decades.

Mid-March is especially known as the time for big machinery auctions.

I'm talking really big, as in huge, nearly all day regional machinery consignment sales. Last Saturday (March 19th) saw two such auctions, one in northern Illinois, the other in central Pennsylvania. I made it down to Leland, IL to cover the Leland Lions Club's 27th annual consignment auction. Wow, what a day. Here's a fun YouTube video I just posted, highlights from my day at the Lions Club auction:

Meanwhile, out in the central Pennsylvania community of Muncy, an even larger consignment sale took place. Fraley Auction Company, Inc. held their annual Spring consignment auction. Auctioneer Adam Fraley dropped me a note saying they had 3,225 registered bidders Saturday and sold over 2,800 lots.

Wow.

Adam reported they started selling equipment at 8 AM and went all day with 3 rings and finished at 10 PM. All told 98% of the items sold Saturday, quite a remarkable figure for such a huge consignment sale. Here are some sale price highlights from last Saturday's auction in Muncy, PA:
