Covering a New York auction Monday

GREG PETERSON 06/21/2013 @ 2:02pm Greg Peterson writes "Machinery Pete" column for Successful Farming magazine and appears on the Machinery Show on RFD-TV, talking about trends in the used equipment market

Adirondack Mountains here I come.

I’m heading to the far northeast corner of New York state, near Lake Placid, NY, to cover a very nice farm retirement auction on Monday (June 24, 2013). We will be filming this auction for our new Machinery Pete “Auction of the Week” show coming to RFD-TV this November.

An interesting mix of equipment on Monday’s auction, including some familiar John Deere tractors in very nice condition with low hours and also quite a line of potato equipment. I’ve been tracking auction sale price data on “Potato Equipment” since 1989, but we just don’t run into it on too many sales these days, so I’m keen to see how this stuff sells on Monday’s auction.

One of the headline potato equipment items is a Kverneland UN3200 4-row cup planter with liquid fertilizer, new John Blue pump, Admire applicator, tongue hitch pull. This planter has done approximately 2,500 acres of total use. Here’s a pic of the planter:

Fifteen years ago, on a farm auction March 27, 1998 in east-central Wisconsin, I saw a 6-year old (1992 model) Kverneland UN3200 4-row planter that had done only 600 acres sell for $13,500. Four years later, on a farm auction March 14, 2002 in north-central Wisconsin a very nice 1995 model Kverneland UN3200 4-row planter sold for $15,000, making it the highest sale price I’ve seen.

This Saranac Lake, NY farm retirement auction by Pirrung Auctioneers, Inc., http://www.pirrunginc.com, features (5) John Deere tractors for sale, including a JD 8220 with only 500 hours. Here’s a pic of the 8220:

I just saw a new record high auction sale price on JD 8220 tractors back on a January 19, 2013 farm auction in northeast Iowa. That JD 8220 was a 2003 model with 1,430 hours. It sold for $140,000. Everything on that particular auction sold very high, including the 1981 JD 4440 tractor with 4,552 hours sold for $47,500. Yep, $47,500. As I said, everything sold high on that sale.

Click on the link below to see what JD 8220 tractors have been selling for at auction the past few years and be sure to check our Machinery Pete Youtube channel, http://www.youtube.com/user/machinerypete, for auction highlights after Monday’s Saranac Lake, NY auction.
