Machinery Pete's top 10 equipment list

GREG PETERSON 11/11/2010 @ 10:48am Greg Peterson writes "Machinery Pete" column for Successful Farming magazine and appears on the Machinery Show on RFD-TV, talking about trends in the used equipment market

Who's No. 1?

Nope, I'm not talking college football rankings. I'm talking used equipment. We have approximately 70 different equipment categories in our Machinerypete.com website and, as of this morning, a total of 250,831 auction sale prices going back 14 years.

So which equipment category would you guess has the highest number of auction sale prices? Do you suppose its "Tractors"? Maybe "Planters"? Or what about "Combine Heads?"

Who's No. 1?

I did some checking this morning and here's what I found out. Machinery Pete's Top 10 List for used equipment sold at auction:

Kind of interesting data I think. Makes sense if you think about it. Picture in your mind any auction you've gone to over the years. How many tractors on an average sale? A couple at least. How many planters or disks? Probably one. Not surprising we've seen more "Combine Heads" sold than "Combines."

Last Saturday (Nov. 6th) I made a post to my Machinery Pete Facebook page on "Trucks". I posted a blurb and picture of the 2006 Ford F350 4x4 pickup with 49,500 miles (long box, power stroke diesel, PW/PD/PL) just sold that day for $21,500 on a farm auction in southeast Minnesota. I mentioned this Ford F350 was auction sale price No. 20,744 on "Trucks" in our website.

In the next four days we had 44 more auction sale prices on "Trucks" come in.

Trucks like the 2000 model Freighliner FL60 dump truck sold Tuesday (Nov. 9th) on a consignment auction in northwest Mississippi for $15,000. The final sale price is just one important bit of info when it comes to "Trucks". Specs are the other. Here's what we showed for Specs on that Freighliner FL60:

"Caterpillar 3126 Engine, 230 HP, 17,500 LB Rear End, Single Axle 4.65 Ratio, 8,000 LB Front Axle, Hyd. Power Steering, Air, Single Fuel Tank, Horizontal Exhaust, Custom Interior, AM/FM, Heated Mirrors, PTO, 2009 Cown/Gravel Star Dump Bed."

How does $15,000 compare to what other Freightliner FL60's have been selling for at auction? See for yourself:
