Ohio farm auction draws attention

GREG PETERSON 01/04/2012 @ 11:14am Greg Peterson writes "Machinery Pete" column for Successful Farming magazine and appears on the Machinery Show on RFD-TV, talking about trends in the used equipment market

What’s your morning routine?

Mine involves a little toast while reading the daily newspaper at the breakfast table, then grab a Diet Coke (a vice I know) and hop into our Machinerypete.com web site. First thing I always check? The “upcoming auctions” http://www.machinerypete.com/UpcomingAuctions/default.aspx

searchable database of equipment on upcoming sales. Always fun to peek around the bend and see what’s coming down the pike.

So this morning I’m looking in on our “upcoming auctions” database of equipment and I see a 2009 JD 9570 STS combine with only 315 engine hours on a January 20, 2012 farm estate auction in South Solon, Ohio. This sale is by Schrader Real Estate & Auction Company, Inc.

Here are a few other pieces of equipment on this auction:

  • 2009 JD 9570 STS combine with 315 engine hours
  • 2010 JD 8270R MFWD tractor with 185 hours
  • 2004 JD 7220 2WD tractor with 729 hours
  • 1998 JD 5310 2WD tractor with 3,233 hours & JD 520 loader
  • 1997 JD 9200 4WD tractor with 3,084 hours
  • 1996 JD 7800 2WD tractor with 2,672 hours
  • 1954 Farmall Super MTA tractor
  • 1949 Farmall Super M tractor
  • 1952 Farmall Super H tractor
  • 2007 JD 630F Hydraflex grain head
  • 2004 JD 893 8-row corn head
  • Kilbros 690 grain cart
  • JD 1770 16R-30 planter
  • JD 1990 30’ air drill
  • JD 512 disc chisel, 7 shank
  • JD 637 disk, 32’
  • JD 2210 field cultivator, 32’

So now my focus turns to what these items are worth. Time to change databases and hop into our “auction results” database of sale prices. Hmm, what do you suppose that JD 9570 STS combine with only 315 engine hours is worth? Click on the link below to see for yourself:

One 9570 that jumps out at me from this list of ones sold at auction is the 2009 model with 600 engine hours sold on the December 3, 2011 auction in east-central Nebraska for $179,000. Here were the “Specs” on that machine:

“350 sep. hours, PREMIER CAB, CONTOUR MASTER, FH HD VAR HD REVR OIL CLR, FH/HICAP/LIFT/CYLINDERS, PREMIUM HEADER CONTROL PKG., ROUND BAR CONCAVE, EXT WEAR-SEP, DEEP TOOTH CHAFFER, EXT. WR GRAIN HANDLING SYSTEM”

Valuable context there, to see more detailed description on a piece of equipment sold. Even more valuable context is gained by seeing what everything else sold for on the December 3, 2011 auction in east-central Nebraska. We have this functionality in our “auction results” database, simply click on any sale price and a pop up screen appears showing a complete sale price report from that particular auction.
