Small used grain carts rise in value

GREG PETERSON 09/13/2012 @ 12:46pm Greg Peterson writes "Machinery Pete" column for Successful Farming magazine and appears on the Machinery Show on RFD-TV, talking about trends in the used equipment market

Small size used grain carts are older, but worth more money vs. 5-10+ years ago.

I could show you proof with auction sale price data examples on many different makes & models, but I’ll focus on one recent example, an EZ Trail 475 grain cart sold last month, on an August 17, 2012 consignment auction in Annawan, IL (northwest Illinois).

The EZ Trail 475 grain cart sold on that auction was in “good” condition. It sold for $4,800. That sale price made the average auction sale price on the last (10) EZ Trail 475 grain carts I’d seen sold at auction over the past five years = $5,115.

Now compare to the average auction sale price on EZ Trail 475 grain carts sold in a prior five year period, from 2000 – 2005: $4,485.

So older now, but worth 14% more $$.

Go back in time with me to February 8, 2003 to a farm auction in southwest Iowa. An EZ Trail 475 grain cart on that auction in “like new” condition…it sold for $2,200. Or a farm auction January 21, 2000 in east-central Illinois with another EZ Trail 475 in “like new” condition…it sold for $3,500. Click on the link below to view these and other auction sale prices I’ve compiled over the last decade-plus on EZ Trail 475 grain carts:

The highest auction sale price of $6,600 came on an online auction by www.Purplewave.com on February 24, 2010. That grain cart came out of Kansas and had a 14’ auger.
