Talking used combine values

GREG PETERSON 05/17/2012 @ 11:10am Greg Peterson writes "Machinery Pete" column for Successful Farming magazine and appears on the Machinery Show on RFD-TV, talking about trends in the used equipment market

Let’s talk combines.

Looking in the “upcoming auctions” searchable database of equipment for sale this morning in our www.machinerypete.com web site I see (3) JD 9760 STS combines listed. Two are on separate farm auctions in Oklahoma, one was scheduled to sell today (May 17th), but the sale was postponed due to a May 1st tornado. The third 9760 combine is on an online auction next month. Here’s the breakdown:

  • May 17, 2012 farm auction, Medford, OK: 2005 JD 9760 STS with 1,709 engine hours….auction postponed due to recent tornado
  • May 24, 2012 farm auction, Shattuck, OK: 2007 JD 9760 STS with 1,906 engine hours
  • June 15, 2102 online auction, Purplewave.com: 2007 JD 9760 STS with 1,300 engine hours.

So now the question becomes what are these JD 9760 STS combines worth? I’ve compiled (188) auction sale prices on JD 9760’s going back seven years, click on the link below to see sale prices back to the start of 2011:

Looks like Saskatchewan, Canada is the place to sell a JD 9760 STS. I’ve highlighted the (5) auction prices from Saskatchewan in the table, each selling from $152,000 - $180,000. Note that a couple did include heads, but still very strong sale prices I’d say, including the 2007 model JD 9760 STS combine with 911 engine hours & JD 615P head sold for $175,000 on an April 2, 2012 farm auction in west-central Saskatchewan

The June 15, 2012 online auction for www.Purplewave.com is a dealer auction featuring (10) John Deere combines for sale. Below is a picture of the 2007 JD 9760 STS with 1,300 engine hours:

Used combine values have fluctuated to a greater degree than other types of used farm equipment over the past two years, with values on late-model used combines softening in early to mid 2010 then solidifying through 2011 into early 2012. What will late spring and summer hold for used combine values? Stay tuned. Lots of fresh auction sale prices rolling in each week.
