Used 6-row planters rising in value

GREG PETERSON 11/18/2011 @ 8:50am Greg Peterson writes "Machinery Pete" column for Successful Farming magazine and appears on the Machinery Show on RFD-TV, talking about trends in the used equipment market

Jaw dropping.

The first time you saw a new 48-row planter, remember? Probably saw it at a farm show. Holy smokes, 48 rows…what a monster. Who would have ever thought we’d see the day? Farming sure has changed over the decades, hasn’t it?

So with anything and everything getting bigger and more complicated these days, older, smaller used 6-row planters must be just about worthless by now, right?

Don’t believe me? Check out the video below, Youtube video I shot last Saturday (Nov. 12, 2011) at a small but very nice farm retirement auction in south-central Wisconsin. The JD 7000 6R-30 planter sold for the 2nd highest auction sale price I’ve seen on a JD 7000 6-row planter, $9,800:

More proof of rising values on very good condition used 6-row planters came on a farm auction in southeast Minnesota back on August 13, 2011. On that sale by Maring Auction Co. a JD 7200 6R-30 sold for $20,250…a new record high auction sale price I’ve seen on a JD 7200 6-row.

At the auction in Wisconsin Saturday you could just tell the JD 7000 6-row planter was going to sell on the high side. 1, 2, 5, 10 guys came up to me and the conversation turned to the planter. I’d ask what they were interested in. They’d say the planter. “I’ve been running a 4-row planter and I can’t find anyone to harvest.”

So, time to upgrade to a used 6-row planter.

This is what I love about farming, the great variety of operations out there across North America. Some guys running the big new 24 or 48-row planters. Others upgrading to a nice 6-row. Each operation has specific equipment needs. What fits one well, not so on the other. So what a nice used 6-row planter is worth in one area, maybe far different in another region.

Put it up for sale and see what it’s worth. Click on the link below for a list of all the JD 7000 6-row Planters I’ve seen sold at auction the last 3 years.
