Moderate cattle trade developed Wednesday afternoon in Kansas and the Panhandle at $108.00 live. This was down $4.00 from the bulk of last week's trade. Trade came after the June futures closed down hard, near 106.00. Trade in Nebraska to major packers came at $175 dressed and $109.00- $109.50 live. Asking prices for cattle left on the lists are mostly $110.00 in the south, but little trade is expected today. Packers have not yet renewed any bids this morning.
The choice cutout was down $0.96 at $177.39 last night, with the select up $0.20 at $172.40. Volume was significantly less than last Wednesday, but still decent compared to recent weeks. Middle meats once again saw sharp discounts despite the approach of Memorial Weekend and anticipation of Father's Day. End cuts were mostly firm, with rounds leading the way.
HOGS
Cash hog calls are mostly steady again this morning, though areas of firmness could persist since packers are still planning on killing good numbers of hogs again next week. Margins are in the black and they are not expected to cut back until the numbers become red.
The pork cutout gained $0.57 last night. Loins had weak tones, and butts were weak to 3 cents lower last night. Ribs saw a big bounce on last minute holiday demand. Heavy hams were 2 cents higher. Bellies were steady.
