Hog cycles are based on contraction and expansion in the market

You keep bringing up the hog cycles, what do you look for to determine where we are? - Does Not Have The Time To Look Ahead At The Market.

The time for these cycles is based on patterns of expansion and contraction in the hog market. With the major investments in facilities it was thought we would not see them anymore but so far that has not been the case. What analysts do is looking for similarities in markets for the years that represent where we are in the cycle? One thing I do see is very high prices and good demand for feeder pigs similar to 2002 and the front month futures are behaving similar to 2002.

Those of us who view the market can look at long term views of the market which some producers cannot because of the time required. The main thing to look at is can I make a profit when making marketing decisions.
