Federal regulators give full registration to BASF's Headline AMP fungicide

Corn farmers have a new option for a preventative and curative fungicide. BASF has received full federal registration for Headline AMP fungicide.

This fungicide combines Headline’s active ingredient -- pyraclostrobin -- with metconazole, the active ingredient in BASF's Caramba fungicide.

Headline, a strobilurin fungicide, is preventative, meaning that it must be applied before the onset of disease to be effective. Meanwhile, the active ingredient metconazole is a triazole and is curative. This means it can control disease that has already surfaced in crops. Ceral grain farmers apply Caramba to control fungal diseases like head scab.

Besides preventative and curative control of foliar fungal corn diseases, BASF officials say Headline AMP has plant physiological benefits as well.

BASF officials say replicated trials show Headline AMP boosts corn yields up to 8 bushels per acre more than other fungicides tested. Diseases on which Headline AMP has excellent activity includes anthracnose, grey leaf spot, Northern corn leaf blight, Southern corn rust and eyespot, say BASF officials.

"Corn treated with Headline AMP doesn't waste energy fighting off disease, which leaves more energy to spend on growth and yield production," said Nick Fassler, BASF technical marketing manager, in a company press release. "This means healthier plants and higher yield potential."
