YieldGard Rootworm corn approved for food use in EU

Agriculture.com Staff 02/06/2006 @ 8:00am

The European Union (EU) recently approved YieldGard Rootworm Corn for food ingredients. It was approved for feed use in November. Monsanto Business Manager for Biotech Grain Phoong Tang said in a Monsanto release last week this is great news for all segments of the corn industry.

"This approval is expected to open doors into European markets that had previously not accepted YieldGard Rootworm and should therefore increase the number of places where growers can sell their single-trait YieldGard Rootworm grain."

"The EU Commission also granted import, feed and processing approval of YieldGard Plus, which is a hybrid stack of YieldGard Rootworm with YieldGard Corn Borer. YieldGard Plus is currently under review by the EU for use in food and food ingredients."

Monsanto is now waiting for decisions on separate approvals for its corn trait technologies combined with the YieldGard Rootworm trait.
