Machinery Pete: 2000 JD 8410 tractor sells for $136,000

GREG PETERSON 09/16/2010 @ 11:22am Greg Peterson writes "Machinery Pete" column for Successful Farming magazine and appears on the Machinery Show on RFD-TV, talking about trends in the used equipment market

The local Deere dealer thought it would bring $100,000.

Boy, was he off! The item in question was a 2000 model JD 8410 MFWD tractor with only 584 hours, sold last Saturday (September 11, 2010) on a very nice farm auction in northwest Illinois. Auctioneer Steve Relander had the sale.

What did it sell for? $136,000.

In fairness to that local Deere dealer, I don't think too many folks would have guessed this tractor would go that high. Just yet another vivid example of how very strong the demand is currently for very nice condition used farm equipment.

How high is $136,000 for that 8410? The previous high auction sale price I had seen on an 8410 was $113,000, for a 2001 model with 1,130 hours sold March 6, 2010 on a farm auction in south-central Illinois. Click on the link below to view the last (40) JD 8410 tractors I've seen sold at auction.

Another indicator of how strong the used market is right now: it only took auctioneer Steve Relander two minutes and 30 seconds to sell that JD 8410 tractor Saturday and get $136,000 for it. I hope to be posting the video clip of this tractor selling on the northwest Illinois auction in our Machinery Pete Youtube channel here soon, so check back for that.

Oh, one more item for you from this September 11th farm auction in northwest Illinois. There was a JD 970 24-foot cultimulcher sold. Steve Relander told me the local Deere dealer guessed he'd be lucky to get $5,000 for it, seeing as cultimulchers just not a high demand item in that particular area.

It sold for $15,700.

That's another record high auction sale price. Next highest sale price I've run across on a JD 970 cultimulcher is $12,250, for a nice 28-foot model sold December 15, 2003 on an auction in northeast Colorado. See for yourself.

Another super farm auction last Saturday, this one in west-central Iowa, provided more of the same, very strong sale prices for exceptionally clean, well cared for used equipment. Check out this video clip of a 1996 model CaseIH 5240 MFWD tractor with only 577 hours selling, followed by a 1997 CaseIH 5220 2WD tractor with 1,016 hours:

That's another record high auction price on the CaseIH 5240 tractor and a near record price on the CaseIH 5220. Once again, see for yourself, click on the link below to view all the CaseIH 5240 tractors I've seen sold at auction the last 14 years:

I'll leave you this week with more video proof of our current very strong used farm equipment market. Highlights of (3) pieces of equipment selling on a great farm sale September 6th in north-central Ohio. Very, very strong sale prices on a 1948 JD B tractor, a 1977 JD 4430 tractor with 6,675 hours and a new record high sale price on the JD 7000 4R-36 corn planter:
