Targeting rural entrepreneurs

Jeff Caldwell 04/04/2011 @ 1:47pm Multimedia Editor for Agriculture.com and Successful Farming magazine.

A new program aiming at stimulating rural entrepreneurship, particularly in the younger generation, is kicking off later this week.

AgNucleus will start out as a set of tools aimed at high school- and college-age rural residents that "focus on the basics of entrepreneurship, the importance of building strong teams and understanding the value of international relations as it relates to agriculture, development, trade and commerce," says agNucleus founder Neil Mylet of West Lafayette, Indiana. Mylet also farms near Camden, Indiana, and is founder and CEO of LoadOut Technologies, developer of mobile applications for agriculture.

"We created agNucleus with the intention of showing youth that a person does not have to live only in urban areas to have opportunities to create a startup that can impact the world," Mylet says. "It is possible to live in rural America, form a team with international partners and transform how industries and communities work."

AgNucleus will be unveiled this week at a meeting of the National FFA Organization in Springfield, Illinois. The ultimate outcome of agNucleus, Mylet says, is to strengthen rural America, starting with the generation that will soon be entering the workforce. "Our goal is to develop agNucleus as a tool to strengthen these students' interest in rural entrepreneurship," he adds.

Moving forward in the near future, Mylet says agNucleus meetups and programs will take place around the Midwest in the coming months. For more on the program as it's unveiled this week, follow it on Twitter at www.twitter.com/agnucleus.
