Used 100-HP tractor values rising

GREG PETERSON 04/26/2012 @ 3:29pm Greg Peterson writes "Machinery Pete" column for Successful Farming magazine and appears on the Machinery Show on RFD-TV, talking about trends in the used equipment market

More evidence just in that values on used 100 HP tractors are going up.

The proof came from a pair of online auctions today, April 25, 2012. On a www.Purplewave.com online auction was a Kubota M105S front-wheel assist tractor with 588 hours and a Kubota LA1301S loader. This “1 owner” tractor from a Kansas seller is actually 105 HP, but close enough here to prove my point. It sold for $33,550 after figuring in the buyer’s premium.

That is the 2nd highest auction price I’ve seen on a Kubota M105S, only $450 behind the 2006 model M105S with 816 hours and a LA1301S loader sold for $34,000 on a February 24, 2012 farm auction in northeast Texas. Like I said, values on good used 100 HP range tractors have been on the rise here in 2012.

Meanwhile, this morning on a www.Bigiron.com online auction, a nice 2000 model JD 6410 front-wheel assist tractor (2nd owner, seller in Oklahoma) with 2,087 hours and a JD 640 loader sold for $39,500, the 3rd highest auction sale price I’ve seen on a JD 6410 and loader in 5 ½ years.

The only higher auction sale prices on 6410’s I’ve seen during that time had much lower hours. Click on the link below to see for yourself:

Last year I released a new quarterly “big picture” look at current and historical trends in the used farm equipment market, my Machinery Pete “Used Value Index”. In this quarterly report I break down the used equipment market into sub categories and get specific about what I’m seeing with used values. Here’s the chart from my recent 2012 1st Qtr. “Used Value Index” report on < 100 HP Tractors:

Machinery Pete 2012 1st Qtr. “Used Value Index”

You can see visually by my graph above that used values have been rising on 100 HP & Under Tractors going on a year now, but really began to shoot higher 4th Qtr. 2011 on through 1st Qtr. 2012, up to the current 7.5 rating on my 1-10 scale with 10 being absolute highest possible used values and 1 being the lowest. For reference, I consider 6.0 to be a “normal/stable” used value rating.

So at a 7.5 rating and climbing, used values on 100 HP & Under tractors are inching up into what I’d call “hot” territory, not as “red hot” as current used values on larger HP Tractors, but gaining.

A quick peek in our “upcoming auctions” searchable database of equipment at our www.Machinerypete.com web site and I see a pair of nice JD 6420 front-wheel assist tractors up for sale on a large farm auction this Saturday, April 28, 2012, in Woonsocket, SD. One JD 6420 is a 2008 model with 2,825 hours and a JD Koyker 385 loader, the other JD 6420 is a 2005 model with 3,011 hours and no loader. Here’s the sale bill.

I’ll be watching this auction Saturday and reporting on our web site what they sell for.
