In its weekly crop and weather summary, the U.S. Department of Agriculture-National Agricultural Statistics Service on Tuesday indicated the corn crop is 11% ahead of normal for this time of year, with the soybean crop close behind, at five percent above normal.

Eighty-two percent of the nation's corn, the NASS report indicated, is at or beyond dough stage, at or ahead of normal in the Corn Belt. Corn denting, as well, progressed at or slightly above average.

"Denting progressed rapidly in the western Corn Belt and adjacent areas of the Great Plains, advancing 27 points in Nebraska, 22 points in Iowa and 20 points in Minnesota and North Dakota, despite slightly below-normal temperatures in the area," according to Tuesday's NASS report. "Seven percent of the crop was mature, one point ahead of last year and the five-year average."

For soybeans, NASS reported Tuesday the crop is "at or ahead of the normal pace in all states." Leaf-dropping has begun in most areas: only one percent of Corn Belt soybeans had begun dropping leaves, while the most advanced leaf-dropping took place in the Delta region. Ninety-three percent of soybean acres have set pods, five percent ahead of the normal pace.
