Midwest frost threat not over
The last day that midwesterners experienced below freezing temperatures this year was on the morning of the 9th of March across IA and on the 10th and 11th of March across IL, IN, and OH. Since those dates, the midwest has seen a record string of extremely unusual warm weather for March and early April.
For Des Moines, IA, this past March was the warmest ever with an average temperature over 55 degrees F breaking the old record of over 51 degrees set back in 1910. This is also true for Peoria IL. There were several other cities in central IL setting warmest ever March records which were set back in 1945 and 1946. Although it is extremely unusual, there are previous times in our past when March was so unusually warm.
So, when is the earliest Date of the Last 32 degree F Freeze in parts of the midwest. The earliest Date of the Last 32 degree Freeze ranges from March 20 in southern IL, to late March and early April in central IL and before April 10th in the northern part of the state. Similarly, the last date of earliest 32 degrees F freeze across IA ranges from late March to early April in the southern counties to the 10th of April in the northwest counties to the 15th of the April in the northeastern counties.
In Moline, IL the earliest last minimum temperature below 32 degrees F was March 28, 1878 and the latest last 32 temperature was May 21, 2002. The average date of the last 32 degree F temperature is April 20th. Since we have talked about March 1910 now being the second warmest March on record for many cities across central IA and IL, it is interesting to look and see when the last freeze occurred in 1910 in this area and we see that the temperature did cool to 32 on April the 25th, 1910 at Moline, IL.
For the next 10-15 days, temperatures in the midwest should be slowly moderating and temperature readings could be close to normal in the 11-15 day time frame, so it is still possible that we may see freezing temperatures in the mid to latter part of this month.
