Wheat deterioration continues
The downturn continues for the winter wheat crop as it starts to sail into dormancy on the Plains.
Monday's USDA-NASS Crop Progress report shows another 2% decline in overall winter wheat conditions from the previous week. Now, 34% of the crop's in good to excellent shape, compared to 66% in very poor to fair condition.
Conditions are worst in South Dakota, where only 4% of the crop is in good condition and the rest ranges from fair to very poor. Eighty-seven percent of Oklahoma's crop, 83% of Nebraska's, and 81% of Colorado's is in fair to very poor condition, Monday's report shows. Kansas and Texas farmers are in slightly better shape, with 72% and 70% of the crop in the lower three quality categories as of Sunday.
