When will your harvest start?

Jeff Caldwell 09/07/2011 @ 2:54pm Multimedia Editor for Agriculture.com and Successful Farming magazine.

What's your harvest timeframe? The forecast looks dry for the next couple of weeks and farmers are taking stock of when they'll fire up the combine and get this year's crop out of the field.

So far, most (38%) say in an Agriculture.com poll they'll get started around the normal time, while 32% say it will be a little later than usual.

"I would say corn in my area starts coming off in about 2 weeks," says Agriculture.com Crop Talk senior contributor Blacksandfarmer. "Most soybeans were planted late here in the eastern Corn Belt, so I would say soybeans will be harvested on time or slightly later."

The same's true west through the Corn Belt, through northern Iowa to Nebraska. In the former area, Crop Talk member jrsiajdranch said a corn field in his area tested at 21% moisture, showing the rest of the corn's not far from being harvested.

"Probably 10 days later than normal, except maybe for some dryland fields that just burned up," adds Crop Talk senior contributor Nebrfarmr. "Otherwise, things will just be too green."

But, those green conditions won't last much longer with the dominating weather pattern settling in over much of the nation's midsection, according to Freese-Notis Weather, Inc., meteorologist Craig Solberg.

"This is a very dry weather pattern coming up for the next ten days for the western Corn Belt, and the east will also dry out nicely next week.
