Beef-packer margins at worst in 8 years

12/06/2011 @ 9:55am

Beef-processing margins are at their weakest levels in eight years and challenging all-time lows, with factors driving the latest decline including recent weakness in beef prices, tight supplies of choice-grade animals and soft demand for select-grade beef.

The latest HedgersEdge packer margin index was minus $92.85/head, compared with -$86.45 the previous day.

The all-time low is -$99.10, set on Dec. 10, 2003, while the record weekly average was set at the same time at -$92.77. (curt.thacker@dowjones.com)
