NFU hosting farm bill listening sessions

Agriculture.com Staff 08/04/2006 @ 3:10pm

The National Farmers Union this week announced plans to hold a series of listening sessions throughout the nation about the 2007 farm bill. The listening sessions will allow rural Americans to voice their opinions about the drafting of future agriculture policy.

"Our organization's strength is drawn from the fact that our policy comes from listening to real farmers and ranchers, because they know what is best for rural America," NFU president Tom Buis said.

The first forum will take place Aug. 5 in Point, Texas, with discussions planned nationwide in August and September. The organization's leaders say they plan to document and take those opinions expressed in the forums to Congress in September. Buis said that it is essential that Congress act deliberately in drafting the new farm bill, having gathered the input of food and fiber producers nationwide.
